In 2007, Bituin Escalante, one of the Philippines’ most underrated yet dynamic singers, released her most-anticipated 3rd album. Entitled, “Ur Luv Thang”, it shows not just this diva’s known vocal tenacity, but also marks the reinvention of Bituin Escalante as the Philippines’ Neo-Soul Diva.
Collaborating with Dan Gil, who wrote and produced all the tracks in the album, Bituin shies away from the generic OPM formula and masterfully transitions from the groovy, jazzy feel in “Let Go”, to the attitude-laden “Last Tango in Manila”, and the old-school soulful vibe and vocals in “There’s No Single Thing”. One track, however, satisfies my craving for a ballad from this awe-inspiring power-belter - “Not A Care in the World”.
Written by Dan Gil and Sach Castillo, it describes two people enjoying each other’s company in reckless abandon; two people clearly in awe of the handiwork of destiny, yet apathetic to whatever the world has to say about them. The chorus says it all (“In my life, never thought this is how it would be - you and me so free, and constantly lost in emotion. Oh my love, this is how I always want it to be - just you and me, not a care in the world.”) reinforced by the bridge (“Tell me this won’t be a passing thing. Tell me that you won’t ever let go of what we have. Tell me loving me ain’t no ordinary thing. I just want to lose myself forever in your arms.”)
In a country with conservative views, it’s a struggle to maintain an unconventional relationship. In these cases, it’s important to have a good bearing of where you are at emotionally as a couple. Because at the end of the day, despite of what people may say, all that matters is the love you both have. Love transcends everything. No age, no race, no position, no sexual orientation should define what love is. When two people genuinely care and want only the best for each other, there love lies. These may just be musings of a generic hopeless romantic, but they’re true. The realist in me acknowledges the fact that the world is full of shallow minds and it will take a long time to make them see the world in a different light. The optimist in me, however, hopes that people will soon have a deeper understanding of what love is. Until that time comes, this song is my anthem and I would like to share this with those couples whose relationship is scrutinized by the peering eyes of those shallow minds.
School days are really stressful but it feels so good to end the day with someone you love. That extraordinary feeling you get when you see that special someone smile after a very tiring day, so priceless.
